Long Road Distillers planning to open newest location in Cadillac next month

CADILLAC — A Grand Rapids-based liquor distillery is in the process of opening their newest location in Cadillac. Long Road Distillers has entered into a lease agreement to use the space at 412 S. Mitchell St., which is the site of the former Better Bodies Health and Fitness Center. Kyle VanStrien, who co-owns Long Road Distillers with business partner Jon O Connor, told the Cadillac News that they re hoping to be open by June 15, although that will be contingent largely on how long it takes the Liquor Control Commission to process their license application to sell spirits at the site. In the meantime, VanStrien said big changes are in store for the site over the next couple of weeks, as crews get the building ready for customers.

Boxing club kids helping to deconstruct Hart school, bring it back to Cadillac

CADILLAC — For many teenagers (and adults, for that matter), there are few things quite as satisfying as destroying a wall with a sledgehammer, although usually such an activity is met with some manner of harsh rebuke. For the kids in the Never Down For The Count boxing club, it s a necessary activity, and one they ll be doing repeatedly over the course of 2021. Coach Dana Wilson said the kids so far have disassembled about 10% of a decommissioned charter school in Hart that they were given as a source of raw materials for their proposed youth center in Cadillac. Wilson runs the boxing gym in Cadillac for at-risk youth and has been attempting to get the youth center off the ground for several years. He purchased an empty factory on River Street and had plans to turn the facility into the youth center, although raising money toward the project has been an ongoing challenge.

Developer turns part of old Bill Oliver's property into storage units, plans to expand

CADILLAC — From a motel, bowling alley and golf ball driving range to storage units — a lot has happened to the former Bill Oliver’s Resort property in Cadillac West over the last 10 years. In July, downstate developer and owner of several other properties in Cadillac, Robb Munger, purchased property to the east of Cherry Grove Event Center off M-55. For years, the property was home to Bill Oliver’s, a Cadillac area mainstay, before being sold and resold again as Cadillac Woods, Best Value and Rodeway Inn. In 2013, Rick Cushman Sr. purchased the property and demolished a portion of it, leaving only the conference center, which was renamed the Cherry Grove Event Center.
