CCCTC Student of the Month | News, Sports, Jobs

May 10, 2021 Blaine Havens, son of Joy and Jasen Havens, is the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center’s February Student of the Month. Blaine is a senior from Beaver Local High School and is enrolled in the Precision Machining and Manufacturing (PMM) Program under the instruction of Matt Peters. He has taken College Credit Plus (CCP) classes since 2018 and is a current member of the Youngstown State Honors College earning the Gene Haas Foundation Scholarship. Upon graduation, he will have earned 38 college credits toward a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Blaine is a member of SkillsUSA, Beaver Local National Honor Society (NHS), CCCTC chapter of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), and is a member of the Beaver Local swim team. Mt. Union scholars ALLIANCE The University of Mount Union hosted its annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research (SCHOLAR) Day in a hybrid in-person/virtual model April 20. SCHOLAR Day is traditionally a campus-wide, day-long event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students. While still adhering to Covid-19 safety protocols, Mount Union provided limited in-person attendance to the poster and formal presentations, while still offering a livestream option to those off-campus. Tucker Cope III, a civil engineering major of Columbiana, was selected for work on a poster titled “Sustainable Erosion Control System.” Bailey Balderson, a public relations major of Alliance, was selected for work on a poster titled “RSM for U-M-YOU.”

Three beautification grants awarded | News, Sports, Jobs

djohnson@mojonews.com LISBON Improvements to two early county cemeteries, a pollinator garden and a lighted fountain were approved projects receiving grant funding through the county’s land bank. The Columbiana County Land Reutilization Corp. board this week chose three of the seven projects throughout the county that applied to receive the first round of beautification grants. Although the land bank had planned to approve a grant up to $5,000, in the end the board determined all three of the final projects were worthy investments in the community. The three projects total $11,450. The first project, presented to the board by Center Township Trustee Rex Underwood, was improvements to two historic cemeteries Gaskill Cemetery on Mattix Road and Lee Cemetery on Lisbon-Millport Road just outside of Scenic Vista Park.
