I always know that springtime has arrived by the stars I see during the early evening hours. One of my favorites is the small but quite beautiful constellation Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown.
The Northern Crown isn’t one of the brighter star groupings, so you’d be better off searching for this one from a dark-sky location when there’s no moon in the sky. You can find it easily by locating one brighter star first.
After dark this week, look midway up in the eastern sky and you’ll see a glistening, yellowish-orange star named Arcturus. You can find it by following the “arc” of the Big Dipper’s handle outward, away from its bowl. Arcturus is the fourth brightest star in the heavens and is also the most brilliant of all Northern Hemisphere stars.

Schools across Greater Manchester have been thanked by families for all they have done to support them during the pandemic. In an article last week about executive headteacher Chris Hanson praising families and staff at Corpus Christi RC Primary in Chadderton, Oldham, for pulling together amid the pandemic, we asked parents to tell us who they wanted to thank.
Gaines Elementary School creating memorial for beloved pre-K teacher
Stoll, a lifelong resident of Athens, died unexpectedly Dec. 16, according to her daughter-in-law, Kristi Stoll.
“Ellen’s greatest love in life was her children and grandchildren, as well as the hundreds of children she taught in private preschools and the Clarke County pre-K program,” Kristi Stoll said.
Stoll began her career in Clarke County in 1992 at Barrow Elementary School, and after one year moved on to Gaines elementary, where she worked until retirement in 2015.
The plaque would be placed outside her former classroom.
During the time when hundreds of children passed through her classroom, she was once honored as Teacher of the Year in 1999-2000.

Joc Pederson has had a strange career so far. In his six-plus seasons in the majors, he’s put together four solid seasons, with WAR totals ranging between 2.7 and 3.5. He’s done it with his bat his career .230/.336/.470 slash line works out to a 118 wRC+. Because he’s done it on the Dodgers, however, he’s been no more than a platoon bat most years, and so in our heads, he’s mostly just a part-time player.
Over these six years, he’s been roughly as valuable as Mike Moustakas, Whit Merrifield, or AJ Pollock, all of whom have felt like stars at one point or another. He’s only 1 WAR shy of Michael Brantley, 2 WAR shy of new teammate Javier Báez. It’s hard to fight the lingering sense that he’s never gotten a full opportunity, though. At least, he hasn’t until now on Friday, the Cubs signed Pederson to a one-year, $7 million deal, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal.
