Two can challenge decision to be tried in higher court

RTÉ Courts Reporter Two men accused of publishing photographs of two teenage boys convicted of murder have been granted leave by the High Court to challenge a decision by the District Court to have them tried in a higher court. 25-year-olds Kyle Rooney from Rathvale Park, Ayrfield, Dublin, and Jamie Shannon, Bremor, Castlegate, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, have taken a High Court action to challenge the District Court s refusal to try the case. Both men are alleged to have published photographs on their Twitter accounts in June 2019 of the two boys convicted of the murder of a teenage girl. The Children Act 2001 makes it an offence to publish the identity of children accused or convicted of a crime.

DPP given more time in case where 10 accused face trial for sharing details of child killers online

PROSECUTORS have been given more time to decide whether to agree to a trial venue for 10 people accused of illegally identifying a schoolgirl s young murderers on social media. A judge today allowed the DPP another six weeks to consider whether to consent to the six men and four women being sent forward from Dublin District Court to the Circuit Court for trial by judge and jury. The formal consent is required after an earlier ruling that the case was too serious to be dealt with at district court level. Judge Marie Quirke adjourned all cases to a date in March.
