Sheriff Mike Blakely arrives at the Limestone County Courthouse in downtown Athens, Ala. just before opening statements in his corruption trial. Blakely, who is 70, has been the county sheriff since 1983.
Judge Pamela Baschab paused the trial against Alabama’s longest serving sheriff today and sent everyone home for the day, after the state prosecutors called a witness who their office is also investigating.
Trent Willis, a political and communications consultant, testified for the state against the 10-term Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely. Willis’ firm, Red Brick Strategies, did work for Blakely’s campaign in 2014. ....
