(Courtesy) Print The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA)’s Region 18 greater San Dieguito chapter recently held its Student Standout Awards. All 50 schools in the region celebrate one student that has excelled in the areas of arts, community service, humanities, courage, fellowship and science. Students were celebrated in a virtual presentation led by ASCA Region 18 President Ben Churchill, superintendent of Carlsbad Unified School District, on May 13. Nathan Gordon, a fifth grader at Ashley Falls, posthumously won the Student Standout Award for courage. Nathan passed away in December 2020 after a long and courageous battle with a rare form of cancer.

We will never forget our experiences of serving on local school boards during the largest public health crisis in recent history. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has tested the capacity and resilience of schools nationwide, we are proud to fiercely advocate for thousands of students as our school districts work toward a safe and equitable reopening. As student board members, our voices are critical to board deliberations that often include parents, teachers and the community while excluding the students themselves. We are fortunate to be members of boards of education where we are judged by the merits of our ideas, not by our age.

Students protest San Dieguito s reopening plan

On Dec. 17, a group of San Dieguito Union High School District students protested for a safer reopening of their schools, sending a message that they want their voices heard and to ensure that their teachers are protected. The students held signs that read: “Keep us safe,” “We stand with our teachers”, “If you don’t act like adults we will” and “You can’t put kids first if you put teachers last.” The protest was prompted by the board’s decision on Dec. 15 to expand the reopening of schools to five days a week on Jan. 27 and due to board member Michael Allman questioning the value of student input as they determine reopening plans.

(Karen Billing) Print The San Dieguito Union High School District board voted 3-2 in favor of a resolution that expands school reopening at the beginning of the third quarter in January, a resolution drafted by new board trustee Michael Allman. The vote came at close to 11 p.m. on Dec. 15, after a nearly six-hour-long meeting with new President Mo Muir, Vice President Melisse Mossy and Allman voting in favor. The resolution states: “Unless specifically ordered otherwise by an applicable public health order issued directly to the district by the county or state, the Governing Board determines and directs that all district schools should be open for on-campus instruction for all students who desire to participate on a full-time basis beginning on the first day of the third quarter of the school year, January 27, 2021.”
