BassFan Senior Editor Bryan Schmitt already had victories at Lake Champlain at the triple-A (2016 Bassmaster Northern Open) and double-A (2019 BFL) levels. Now he s got a big-league win from the renowned venue that straddles the New York/Vermont border.
The 40-year-old pro from Maryland picked up his first Bassmaster Elite Series trophy and 100 much-needed Angler of the Year (AOY) points by compiling 78-05 over 4 days in the second-to-last event of the 2021 campaign. He took over the lead on day 2 and never relinquished it, holding off runner-up Keith Combs by half a pound.
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y., July 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Â Bryan Schmitt talked all week about special little things that were happening to help him maintain the lead at the Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain.
But the most special one happened just 15 minutes before Sunday s final weigh-in, as Schmitt landed a 3 1/2-pound smallmouth that gave him a 12-ounce upgrade and allowed him to secure his first Elite Series win with a four-day total of 78 pounds, 5 ounces.

Call it luck. Call it fate. But the win seemed meant to be for the second-year Elite Series pro from Deale, Md. I pulled up to a buoy cable this afternoon right before time to come in and saw two fish on my (Garmin) LiveScope, Schmitt said. I threw that drop shot in there, felt the bite and didn t really think it was a bass. But it turns out it was a bass â and without that fish I don t win.

Bryan Schmitt caught some nice largemouths on day 3 of the Lake Champlain Bassmaster Elite Series, but thinks he ll need the cooperation of smallmouths on the final day.
By B.A.S.S. Communications Staff To hear Bryan Schmitt talk there isnt a single bass left in Lake Champlain. Theyre all gone. Just vanished.
But dont buy any of it for a second.
The perennially pessimistic Maryland pro caught another big limit Saturday this time five bass that weighed 19-04 to increase his three-day total to 62-04 and maintain his lead at the Bassmaster Elite Series event out of Plattsburgh, N.Y.
