Another roadblock for major Kingscliff development? – The Echo

Haul route from Tweed Coast Road to Turnock Street, Kingscliff. A rescission motion for the approval of the construction of a haul route in west Kingscliff by Gales Holdings (DA20/086) that is designed to facilitate bringing in fill from the M1 upgrade was hotly debated at last Thursday’s Tweed Shire Council meeting with confusion over what the DA was and wasn’t approving.  Councillor Ron Cooper (Independent) raised issues for Kingscliff residents in relation to the ‘90,000 truck and trailer movements’ that the bringing in of fill to the development site rather than using sand from the site would have. He told the meeting that approval of the development application (DA) ‘didn’t consider the potential long-term damage to our roads, [impacts on] our amenity, our health, and our tourist industry’.

Gales seek to increase height limits for Kingscliff – The Echo

Kingscliff Changes to building height limits for Kingscliff and the development of parklands and buildings that impacted on some environmentally sensitive areas were two of the sticking issues that led to the rejection of the Gales Holdings rezoning proposal by the Tweed Shire Council at last weeks meeting. Gales Holdings had submitted a proposed ‘Gateway’ determination to the Department of Planning Industry and Environment (DPIE), seeking a planning rezoning related to their Kingscliff Master Plan development. Speaking to The Echo Tweed Shire Council Mayor Chris Cherry (Independent) said, ‘We have just finished Kingscliff Locality Plan (KLP). Then to have something put forward that ignored that – what they are proposing is not the kind of proposal that fits in with the KLP.’

The debate over the movement of fill via the Tweed Coast Road and through Kingscliff to fill future development sites has been considered by residents, Tweed Shire Councillors, and staff at the last two planning meetings and a workshop in between. Councillors Warren Polglase (Conservative) and Pryce Allsop (Conservative) have both been pushing hard for the development application DA20/0965 to allow free fill from the M1 roadworks to be trucked in to be used as fill by Gales Holdings. This would be used for filling land on and around Turnock Street and would replace the Land and Environment Court (L&EC) approval for bringing fill from their existing local quarry site. The DA seeks truck and dog movements every two minutes for six and a half days per week for a minimum of 28 weeks to bring in the fill.
