Dr Richard DicKard, Retired Dentist and Camptonville Community Builder

July 14, 2021 Host Brian Buckley brings an insider’s perspective on the life and times of retired dentist and Camptonville community activist Dr. Richard DicKard. Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Southern California, Richard remembers special times on a ranch and looking for copper and gold in Arizona. Studying Physics at UCLA brought a confrontation with Calculus, and a realization that his interests were more about working with people than lab science. A great score on a dental aptitude exam led to a dental degree from UCSF Medical Center. Marriage brought a partnership effort working with Vietnamese families in the Central Valley, a year in Florence, Italy, and a dental clinic for indigenous folks in Arizona. The young couple looked at many small communities as candidates for a permanent home, found our area to have great cultural assets and geography, purchased raw land and built their home in 1976 in rural Camptonville, and opened a dental practice in Nevada City.

A Tahoe driver was stranded for 7 hours in snow Officials say it happens all the time

A Tahoe driver was stranded for 7 hours in snow. Officials say it happens all the time By Gregory Thomas A Tahoe man who survived a blizzard while stranded in his pickup truck for 7 days in remote Sierra wilderness told officials he was initially led astray by his GPS navigation system. On Jan. 24, the man, 29-year-old Harland Earls of Placer County, set out from a friend’s home in Grass Valley for the 60-mile drive to Truckee. Under mild conditions, it’s a straight shot from Highway 20 to Interstate 80 over Donner Pass. However, winter road closures prompted Earls’ GPS app to reroute him along an obscure back road, where he ran into trouble.
