No. 19 Diamond Rebels Notch Sweep over No. 13 Gamecocks
OXFORD, Miss. No. 19 Ole Miss swept the No. 13 ranked Gamecocks of South Carolina at Swayze Field this weekend. After losing the prior four series, earning the sweep was important for the Rebels. Ole Miss’ pitching rotation, offense, and bullpen came together for what is arguably the best weekend performance of the 2021 season, and that is exactly what the Rebs needed.
Game One: Ole Miss 5, South Carolina 1
Gunnar Hoglund started for the Rebels and was lights out from his very first pitch. Hoglund went six innings on Friday night while he held the Gamecocks’ offense scoreless, tallying nine strikeouts in the process.

OXFORD, Miss. This weekend, Swayze Field will play host to a battle between teams from the SEC East and West. The East will be represented by the South Carolina Gamecocks (26-12, 11-7 SEC), who come into Oxford with a good record against league foes after sweeping Florida, winning 2-1 both at Georgia and at home against Missouri. The Rebels (28-12, 10-8 SEC) have recorded two sweeps this season, Auburn at home and on the road at at Alabama.
Going into this weekend, Ole Miss has lost its last four SEC series: to Florida in Gainesville, Arkansas at home, Mississippi State in Starkville, and LSU at Swayze. The Rebs just have not had the right pieces of the puzzle fall into place yet, and much of that goes back to injuries and absences due to COVID protocols. Ole Miss dropped the series to LSU over the weekend, despite a dramatic game three comeback.
Derek Diamond took the mound on Thursday night in his first series start ever. Diamond was a late change to the position lineup after the usual starter, Gunnar Hoglund, was a late scratch due to arm soreness. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run and only four hits.
Offensively all of the Rebels’ runs came from home runs. Jacob Gonzalez, Kevin Graham, and Hayden Leatherwood each had a home run in the first game. LSU scored three runs in the seventh inning, and Ole Miss was unable to come back. They lost the game 4-5.

OXFORD, Miss. (WAFB) - No. 9 Ole Miss avoided the series sweep against LSU with an eight run eighth inning to tie the game at 9-9 and then walked it off in with a solo home run in the ninth at Swayze Field in Oxford, Miss.
The Tigers (24-15, 6-12 SEC) erupted for nine runs on 12 hits against Ole Miss (28-12, 10-8 SEC) to take a 9-1 through the first seven innings.

Entering the eighth inning things started to fall apart for LSU as Ole Miss rallied and scored 8 runs including two home runs. The first on a three-run blast to make it 9-5 and then a grand slam by TJ McCants that would tie the game later in the eighth inning at 9-9.

Ole Miss baseball followed up their recent series loss to Mississippi State with a close win over Little Rock on Tuesday night. This win puts Ole Miss at 27-10 overall, and 9-1 in midweek games.
The midweek game had a number of lineup changes. Sophomore Peyton Chatagnier started at third base for the first time this season, and freshman TJ McCants returned to the second base along with hitting in the leadoff position for the first time this season. Freshman Kemp Alderman had his first plate appearance and career start, while freshman Jack Dougherty also had his first start as a Rebel pitcher.
