Florida House could open door to pre-game prayers

NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA Amid a long-running legal battle, the Florida House appears poised to pass a bill that would allow high-school speakers to offer remarks, including prayers, over public-address systems before athletic championship games. The House on Tuesday took up the bill (HB 1027), sponsored by Rep. Webster Barnaby, R -Deltona, and positioned it for a vote. The measure comes during a lawsuit over a decision by the Florida High School Athletic Association in 2016 to block Cambridge Christian School of Tampa from offering a prayer over the public-address system before a football championship game at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.

Ron DeSantis’ COVID-19 response may be getting dragged through the mud by national media, but a new survey shows Florida voters are fans. Polling firm Cygnal surveyed 800 likely general election voters in Florida and found 60% believe DeSantis has done a good job navigating the state through the pandemic. That beats the 58% approval earned by the Joe Biden administration and the 49% approval for Donald Ron DeSantis gets high marks for his COVID-19 response strategy. Floridians aren’t just fans of DeSantis’ plans; they’re fans of the man himself, handing him a plus-17 job approval rating halfway through his first term. The media, which has taken to thrashing DeSantis a few times in recent weeks, earned a minus-14 approval rating from the same set of voters.

Prayer into microphone before high school games: Florida bill allows it

The case was dismissed at the district-court level, but the Court of Appeals sent the case back, and it remains ongoing. Cambridge Christian points to the 2012 championship game between University Christian and Dade Christian School, when praying over a loudspeaker was allowed by the FHSAA, as it was prior to the other three FHSAA contests in which Cambridge Christian competed during the 2015 playoffs. Circuit Judge Stanley Marcus, in his opinion for the Court of Appeals, wrote:  Permitting certain speech on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and baring precisely the same message on Friday without credible explanation of what may have changed is the essence of arbitrary, capricious and haphazard  and therefore unreasonable  decision making.
