If you’ve been chasing striped bass since April, and just maybe earlier if you’re a holdover loony, than chances are you may be in need of a change. Filling that void is the arrival of bonito! While it is not unheard of to have these fish rip through Massbay, to have this happen in July is extremely rare. Even more exceptional is the size of these fish which would be impressive even in Buzzards Bay!

Massachusetts Fishing Report – May 6, 2021
With schoolies swarming most inshore areas, you should have no problem catching.
While the weather has not been fisher-friendly it sure hasn’t stopped the ongoing migration of our beloved striper as reports of fresh fish trickle in from the South Shore through the North Shore. Haddock remain the hot ticket for deeper water adventurers with the haul not necessarily as far from port as you may think. With the focus so totally now on linesiders, you may find freshwater honey holes now lacking company.
Massachusetts South/Boston Fishing Report
Pete Belsan of
Belsan Bait and Tackle in Scituate said that schoolie bass up to the mid-20” range are beginning to swarm the Three Bays, Scituate Harbor, the North River and all the way into Cohasset. The new Bill Hurley ABB stick bait has been one of the more consistent catchers for these fresh fish. Divers are reporting tautog moving upstream into estuaries and bays as they prepare to spawn.

Well, they are here! Fresh schoolies have invaded Greater Boston and while I haven’t heard, I suspect the South Shore as well! However, if you can cool your engines just a little longer, you may find incredible haddock fishing! Still, it is only April and the freshwater fishing is so good that it underscores the “sweet” in sweetwater!
I don’t exactly need an arm-twisting to talk about fishing, so it didn’t take much prodding from Captain Brian Coombs of Get Tight Sportfishing to convince me to give my take on flounder fishing at Monahan Marine in Weymouth Saturday. While I believe it went well, there were times I may have looked a bit distracted.
