CONDITIONING House played a key role in the UK s textile industry but for 30 years stood in a sorry state. Now, as the T&A has reported, an £18 million restoration by Priestley Homes has transformed it into stylish apartments. Here we look back at the mighty Cape Street mill complex over the years. Grade II listed Conditioning House was built in 1902 by Bradford Corporation, through a special Act of Parliament. It was the only Council-run centre in the UK for wool testing and almost 70 per cent of all wool produced in the UK was brought there first. In its heyday UK-made wool was brought in to Conditioning House to check and control the moisture content.

When longtime arts philanthropist Carlie Wilmans first stepped into artist David Ireland’s house at 500 Capp Street in the Mission District in 2008, she had no idea she would spend 13 years of her life and more than $6 million in service of its preservation.
Beginning in the 1970s, Ireland, a well-known sculptor and conceptual artist, had turned the San Francisco space into a canvas for his site-specific installations, work that could have been lost without intervention.
Around the country, among allies and foes alike, San Francisco often acts as a byword for progressivism and queer liberation.
But the city is also the epicenter of the state s housing crisis, and for many LGBTQ seniors particularly those who are of color or trans who ve dealt with that experience, life in the City by the Bay hasn t always been somewhere over the rainbow.
Veronika Fimbres, 68, who is a former San Francisco veterans affairs commissioner and in 2018 was a Green Party candidate for California governor, has lived in the city s Sunnyside neighborhood for a dozen years. Her experience has run the gamut of housing in San Francisco.
