Grade II listed Conditioning House was built in 1902 by Bradford Corporation, through a special Act of Parliament. It was the only Council-run centre in the UK for wool testing and almost 70 per cent of all wool produced in the UK was brought there first. In its heyday UK-made wool was brought in to Conditioning House to check and control the moisture content.

Beginning in the 1970s, Ireland, a well-known sculptor and conceptual artist, had turned the San Francisco space into a canvas for his site-specific installations, work that could have been lost without intervention.
