Used car importers set to pay Sh2,000 pest inspection fee Tuesday May 11 2021 By VICTOR JUMA Summary Importers of used cars could soon start paying a Sh2,000 inspection fee for each unit as the government renews its efforts to stop importation of foreign pests. The inspection fee for each minibus or van has been proposed at Sh3,000 while that for bus, lorry or truck is Sh5,000 and heavy commercial machinery is Sh10,000. The fees have been varied compared to 2017 when the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (Kephis) first mooted the plan with a proposed charge of 5,000 for each motor vehicle. Workers at Thika auto plant get better terms

Local and international labour unions have been campaigning against the piece rate system at the Thika-based car assembling plant, which paid workers on an hourly basis. An update from the firm said that following support from the Volkswagen Works Council at the beginning of the year, the 42 workers have better contracts and will be paid monthly. This push was led locally by the Amalgamated Union of Kenya Metal Workers (AUKMW) and taken internationally by the Industrial Global Union, which represents 50 million workers in 140 countries in the manufacturing, energy and mining sectors.

Data from the Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMI) shows that the formal dealers including Simba Corporation, Toyota Kenya and Isuzu East Africa assembled a total of 7,052 units in the review period. This was a slight increase from 6,894 units that were assembled in 2019. The number of motor vehicles assembled locally rose 2.2 per cent in the year ended December, accounting for 63.6 per cent all new auto sales.
