Last season, Arkansas fans got a first-hand look at the impact a transfer can have on an offense.
After losing the starting job at Florida thanks to an injury, Feleipe Franks entered the portal and emerged in Fayetteville as the Razorbacksâ starting quarterback under first-year head coach Sam Pittman and offensive coordinator Kendal Briles.
It went about as well as anyone could have hoped, as he led Arkansas to three victories - and two narrow losses - while shattering the single-season school record for completion percentage that had been set four decades earlier.
They likely wonât have the same immediate impact as Franks, but the Razorbacks did bring in former four-star recruit TyâKieast Crawford to bolster the offensive line this offseason, plus added two other offensive transfers as walk-ons - quarterback Kade Renfro (Ole Miss) and wide receiver Warren Thompson (Florida State).
1. KJ Jefferson - QB
The success of Sam Pittmanâs second season as Arkansasâ head coach likely hinges on how well KJ Jefferson handles being the full-time starting quarterback. That is true of most football teams at every level of the game, but it is particularly true for the Razorbacks.
A former four-star recruit, Jefferson has a couple of starts under his belt already and has shown glimpses of his potential - including at Missouri last season. Starting in place of an injured Feleipe Franks, he led Arkansas to its best offensive output of 2020, piling up 48 points on 566 yards.
If he can bottle that up and perform like that over the course of a 12-game season, the Razorbacks could have a dynamic offense this year. Based on returning seniors and starters Arkansas could have one of the most experienced football teams in the country.
The only significant change among the offense is quarterback. Losing your starter in Feleipe Franks may not hurt too badly when the quarterback behind him, KJ Jefferson, almost led the Razorbacks to a road upset over Missouri when Franks was out due to injuring his ribs during the “off week”.
Jefferson was very efficient that day throwing for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a quarterback rating of 154.3 according to Sports-Reference.com.
