PROVIDENCE Gov. Dan McKee is staffing up for a 2022 run for the office he acquired by happenstance on March 2 when Gina Raimondo quit mid-term to go to Washington, and leapt from lieutenant governor to governor.
The McKee 2022 campaign on Monday confirmed the hiring of SKDK as his campaign consultant, LB Strategies as his fundraising consultants and David Binder - who has polled in the past for big-name national politicians, including former President Barack Obama - as his pollster.
The campaign plans to hire a full-time finance director in the near future, according to McKee.
The hirings are clearly aimed at shoring up McKee s ground game in a Democratic primary against three or more potential challengers, including state Treas. Seth Magaziner, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza.

ICYMI: Rhode Island was up to 115,956 confirmed coronavirus cases on Tuesday, after adding 1,409 new cases since Jan. 29. The most-recent overall daily test-positive rate was 3.7 percent, and the first-time positive rate was 20.3 percent. The state announced 19 more deaths, bringing the total to 2,173. There were 316 people in the hospital, and 74,557 residents had received the first dose of the vaccine.
