GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Memorial Day weekend often marks the start of boating season in Northeast Wisconsin.
“There are a lot of brand new boaters on the water this year. There were last year. There are even more on the water this year,” Coast Guard Auxiliary public affairs officer Kevin Osgood said.
Whether you’re a new boater or an experienced one, experts say it’s important to keep safety in mind.
The Coast Guard and harbor masters say that starts with making sure everyone on board has a life jacket.
“It’s one thing to have them, it’s another thing to wear them. Sure there’s a fine and it’s not inexpensive if you’re not wearing a life jacket or don’t have one with you, but the price you pay if you don’t have one at the moment you need it is much more expensive,” Osgood said.

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) â For many, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial launch of boating season. Those patrolling the water are reminding people to practice safe boating.
As part of National Safe Boating Week, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 47-02 out of Green Bay is reminding people that preparation and safety is easier than you might think.
âWhether itâs an eight-foot kayak that you picked up at a big box store or a yacht that you spent an awful lot of money on, if youâre gonna put yourself or your family on a vessel and go out on the water this summer, itâs best to have a safety check done,â said Public Affairs Officer Kevin Osgood. âNo tickets, no citations, no fees. We check your equipment, check the gear, [and] make sure you have what you need out there on the water in case something were to go wrong. If you donât [have everything], then you have a copy of what you need to go out
