LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore today spoke before the L.A. City Council Budget and Finance Committee to outline his case for his department s budget increase under Mayor Eric Garcetti s 2021-22 fiscal year proposal, which would give the department about $1.76 billion.
In the committee s third of eight meetings to break down Garcetti s proposed $11.2 billion budget, Moore spoke to the committee s five council members about why he thinks the department needs the funding proposed, calling the budget “a good budget.
The Los Angeles Police Department would receive the most funding in the proposed budget, with a $1.76 billion budget, a 3% increase from when the Los Angeles City Council cut $150 million from the department s budget last July.

âThe people taking to the streets got us guilty verdicts yesterday ⦠not the system. The system isnât for us,â said Stephanie Luna, the aunt of Anthony Vargas, a 21-year-old killed by LA sheriffâs deputies in 2018. â[The verdict] gave us a lot of hope â we need to bring some of that down to California.â
Mothers in the crowd cheered while holding signs with the names of their children killed by LA police, as others waved âWe keep us safeâ flags and banners callingfor the dismantling of powerful law enforcement unions.
Since the mass protests sparked by George Floydâs murder in May 2020, activists have been campaigning to cut the LAPD budget, arguing that the best way to prevent police violence is to reduce officersâ contact with the community and reinvest those funds into community programs and services.
