Where we stand with the 28 violent deaths last year in Springfield This past year was a record-breaking one in terms of homicides in the city of Springfield, mirroring a national trend of increasing murders in a year like none other. According to the Springfield Police Department, there were 28 violent deaths in the cicty in 2020 where one person killed another in an incident that wasn t a traffic accident. Of those 28 violent deaths, a police department spokeswoman said Friday that 20 are now considered murders by the FBI s definition, which excludes things like justified killings and accidental shootings. Here s a look at that status of each case as of Friday, according to the Springfield Police Department:

PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) The mayor of one of New Jersey s largest cities is pleading for African-Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and he s hoping some influential friends can help get out the word. Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh was joined by Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly, Pastor Kenneth Clayton, former NFL player Leonard Marshall, and former MLB player Dwight Gooden Thursday to address the importance of the coronavirus vaccination and encourage the Black community to register for the shot. Since Paterson has begun inoculations, the African American community has accounted for less than 5% of individuals receiving the vaccine. Statewide, only 2% of recipients are Black males.

Man awaits court date in death of infant son in Rio Vista RIO VISTA A man arrested Saturday in connection with the death of his infant son remained in jail Sunday and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday. Tre Kenneth Clay, 23, of Rio Vista, faces allegations of murder and assault on a young child causing great bodily injury or death. He is being held without bail. It’s the first reported homicide of 2021 in both Rio Vista and Solano County. The case centers on the death of a 2-month-old boy with serious injuries who was taken to Kaiser Permanente’s hospital in Antioch and quickly transferred to the University of California, San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where authorities report the child later died.
