Charley Pride, the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, died Saturday at the age of 86 from coronavirus-related complications, the Associated Press reported.
Pride s last performance was at the Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) live televised event in Nashville on November 11.
Following his death, musicians Marren Morris and Brandi Carlile aired their concerns on Twitter that Pride may have contracted COVID-19 at the indoor awards show performance. ....

Country musicians and celebrities are mourning the loss of country legend Charley Pride, who died on Saturday due to complications from COVID-19.
Pride a pioneer for Black musicians in country music died in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 86, a statement on his website confirmed.
Dolly Parton, Maren Morris, Jason Aldean, and more remembered Pride s legendary impact on country music by sharing tributes to the musician on social media.
I’m so heartbroken that one of my dearest and oldest friends, Charley Pride, has passed away. It’s even worse to know that he passed away from COVID-19. What a horrible, horrible virus. Charley, we will always love you, Parton, 74, wrote on Twitter. ....

In the early 1960s, a young minor league baseball pitcher and aspiring country singer named Charley Pride had settled into a discouraging routine. His days were spent toiling in Helena, Mont., at a smelter operated by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and he spent his free time playing for its semipro baseball team, the East Helena Smelterites.
He stood out as an African American working in a musical genre that seldom welcomed Black voices. But he developed a small but enthusiastic fan base singing in Montana honky tonks, which in 1962 led to his invitation to perform before a show headlined by country singers Red Sovine and Red Foley. ....
