Rhode Islanders on Thursday had their chance to sound off on a House bill that would dissolve the Providence Tourism Council and instead send funds to the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau. Those opposed, which included restaurateurs and Providence Tourism Council Chair and Commissioner Alexis Gorriaran, raised concerns over transparency, independence and a lack of public input on the proposal sponsored by Democratic Rep. GoLocalProv | Federal Hill's Oldest Bakery is Back

The iconic bakery closed briefly in September 2020, after opening on Atwells Avenue in 1916.  Rick Simone with the Federal Hill Commerce Association announced its return on Thursday.  “I’m thrilled to announce the return of Scialo Brothers Bakery to [Federal Hill],” said Simone. “This renewed special Italian bakery is now open for all to once again enjoy and celebrate new traditions.” Latest for Atwells Ave Business As GoLocal reported in 2020, the building that houses Scialo’s was sold to investors but according to Simone, the new owners wanted to find a way to make sure the bakery could return.  “Everyone who was there [at Scialo’s] is back,” Simone told GoLocal, of the bakery’s staff returning.

Rhode Islanders on unemployment will have to prove they're looking for a job to qualify

April 27, 2021 10:33 am PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Requirements for people collecting Rhode Island unemployment benefits will soon change. The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training says Rhode Islanders will have to prove they are actively looking for work to be able to collect their benefits. This comes as several business, especially restaurants, report they are struggling to fill open positions. The Federal Hill Commerce Association told ABC6 news there are 300 open positions on the hill alone.
