Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 678, an incremental upgrade over SD675
Remember when the Snapdragon 6xx series was exciting? The mid-range centric chipset range was quite relevant back in 2018 before the arrival of the Snapdragon 7xx series. Nowadays, the Snapdragon 6xx chipsets we have are a jack of all trades for devices in the mid-range and budget segments. For instance, the Snapdragon 662 is the new choice of many Android OEMs and it offers solid performance for everyday tasks, but nothing beyond that. Today, all of sudden, Qualcommunveiled a new Snapdragon 678 SoC that sits as its best offering for mid-range smartphones.
Back in 2018, the company unveiled the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675. It was present in just a couple of devices like the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Vivo U20, Galaxy A70s. The newly announced, Snapdragon 678 sits as a successor for this chipset. It brings improvements for photography, connectivity, but it is not much better in terms of battery backup.

Qualcomm has announced the successor to its Snapdragon 675 - Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 for mid-range smartphones. It brings improved photography and videography, immersive entertainment experience and long battery life over reliable connectivity.
“Snapdragon 678 brings advanced mobile capabilities for daily entertainment at lightning-fast speeds over reliable connections and long-lasting battery life for consumers worldwide, said Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
Its camera features are powered by Qualcomm Spectra 250L ISP. It brings Portrait Mode (Bokeh), Low-Light Capture, Laser Autofocus and HD 4K video with recording features, such as slo-mo recording, 5x optical zoom, and portrait mode. The chipset supports phones up to 48-megapixel main and 16-megapixel selfie cameras.

Qualcomm recently announced a new Snapdragon 600 series chipset for the more affordable handsets of 2021. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 SoC succeeds the Snapdragon 675 and aims to bring improvements in photography and connectivity capabilities without sacrificing battery life.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 SoC is built on the 11nm LLP process, similar to its predecessor. The chipset features overclocked Cortex A76 cores clocked at up to 2.2GHz. The chip uses the same Adreno 612 GPU on the Snapdragon 675 SoC, although Qualcomm promises improved performance.
