India and Saudi Arabia have long enjoyed cordial relations, primarily driven by India’s energy security requirements. But the bilateral partnership has seen important shifts in recent years. According to Indian media reports, the armies of the two countries plan to hold a joint exercise for the first time. The exercise will be conducted in the latter part of the year and the Indian Army contingent will travel to Saudi Arabia for it. The decision to hold joint army exercises appear to be a follow up to the visit of General N.M. Naravane, the I ....

India-Saudi defense ties on the upswing

RIYADH: The signing of the landmark Riyadh Declaration during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to Riyadh in 2010 raised the bilateral relationship between India and the Kingdom to a strategic partnership. The partnership covers security, economic, defense, and political areas and was perhaps the starting point in structured bilateral defense cooperation between India and Saudi Arabia.

The JCDC held four meetings in 2012, 2016, 2017 and 2019 during which fruitful discussions were held on training and capacity building, intelligence exchange, maritime security, and the promotion of defense in ....

Gen. Naravane with Lt Gen. Mutlaq bin Salim bin Al-Azima, Commander of the Joint Forces, Saudi Arabia, during Naravane’s Dec. 13-14 Saudi visit
A slew of foreign visits by Indian army chief General MM Naravane to Myanmar and Nepal in October/November, and now to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, signals New Delhi’s diplomatic offensive in regions that are geopolitically sensitive for India. Not surprisingly, this is drawing sharp reactions from Pakistan and its big brother ally, China. While the Pakistani media is abuzz with talk of Muslim ‘brother’ countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE betraying Pakistan, the Chinese official media is also making noises that the visits were a ‘PR ploy’ and of little substance. ....
