PLYMOUTH – If a pet shop should open here in the future, it won’t be able to offer puppies, kitties and bunnies. Town Meeting approved an article that restricts retailers from selling “puppy mill” animals.
Proposed by Kathryn Holmes, the article specifically targets national stores that get their pets from factory-style breeding operations where the animals are raised in “squalid conditions.”
“There are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills in the United States,” the Precinct 8 chair and chair of the Committee of Precinct Chairs told Town Meeting. “These puppies, kittens and rabbits are raised in tiny cages and are covered in filth. The conditions are cruel and inhumane.”
