RDEK hosting public info meeting on debris flow
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is hosting a public information meeting to provide an update on the Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation project and Fairmont Flood and Landslide Service on June 16 at 7 p.m.
The meeting will be done electronically, so you can participate from wherever you are.
The meeting will include an update from BGC Engineering on the Cold Spring Creek Risk Analysis Assessment, as well as updates on the project and status of the grant application.
There will also be an opportunity for questions and answers with the public.
RDEK Board Highlights
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Jan. 8 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors’ meeting.
Funding application to be submitted for Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Project
An application for $10 million will be submitted to the Adaptation, Resilience and Disaster Mitigation Program for the Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Mitigation Phase 2 Project. Construction on Phase 1 of the project is slated to begin this year.

The board supported a Crown land referral for a 60-berth moorage facility on Lake Windermere. The Crown land tenure application by the Pedley Heights Community Association is a reapplication for a proposal that was previously disallowed by the province. In 2018, the RDEK rezoned the surface of Lake Windermere to permit the proposed moorage facility.

Back in 1982, Juno award winning Canadian band Doug and The Slugs debuted their iconic hit “Making It Work” and I feel like that could be the chorus for 2020 as we have all faced, and adapted to, an ever-changing world around us.
Our East Kootenay Emergency Management Program and emergency response personnel played a very active role throughout 2020, responding to a wide variety of emergencies.
From coordinating the response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, to responding to flooding events, providing support to the BC Wildfire Service and evacuees on the largest fire in B.C. this year (Doctor Creek), and assisting in smaller events such as the recent Cranbrook Hotel fire, our Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) teams have been busy this year.
