Ilyse Morgenstein-Fuerst, Anti-Racism as a Spiritual Practice

  Simran Jeet Singh::I’m excited to introduce our guest today. She’s a very dear friend of mine, Ilyse Morgenstein-Fuerst. She’s an associate professor of religion at the University of Vermont and associate director of its Humanities Center. Before joining the religion faculty there, she earned her B.A. in religion at Colgate University, her MTS at Harvard Divinity School, which is where we met, and she completed her Ph.D. in religious studies with an emphasis on Islamic studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her specialization within the broad scope of the study of religion is Islam with a particular regional focus in South Asia.

Omid Safi, Anti-Racism as a Spiritual Practice

Simran Jeet Singh: I’m excited to introduce our guest for today, Omid Safi, he’s a dear friend and a mentor. Dr. Safi teaches online courses on spirituality through Illuminated Courses. He makes spiritual tourists every year to Turkey, Morocco and other countries. And these trips are open to everyone from every country. He’s a professor of Islamic Studies at Duke University. He specializes in the study of Islamic mysticism and contemporary Islam, and he frequently writes on liberationist traditions of Dr. King, Malcolm X, and he’s committed to traditions that link together love and justice. He’s written many books, including Progressive Muslims, which is the first of his books that I have read, that’s a book on justice, gender and pluralism. He Cambridge Companion to American Islam, Politics of Knowledge in Pre-modern Islam, Memories of Mohammed, which I highly recommend and I use it in my courses. Wil Gafney, Anti-Racism as a Spiritual Practice

Simran Jeet Singh: The Reverend Dr. Wil Gafney is a scholar, pastor, preacher, and activist. She’s a professor of Hebrew Bible at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth Texas, where she teaches master’s and doctoral students in initial and advanced degree programs. She’s the author of Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction To The Women Of The Torah And The Throne, author of Daughters of Miriam: Women Prophets in Ancient Israel, and she’s the co-editor of the people’s Bible and the People’s Companion to the Bible. And if I understand correctly, she’s currently working on a women’s lectionary that’s in contract with Church House Publishing. She’s an Episcopal priest, canonically resident in the Diocese of Pennsylvania and licensed in the Diocese of Fort Worth.
