Free car parking READING your front page headline “Dismay at end date for free parking extension (D&S Times, Apr 2), I cannot believe the stupidity, hubris and lack of understanding of how retail works by the local councils. Sorry for the lack of diplomacy but they are just not working in the real world or is there a hidden agenda? The councils seem to be applying a death by a thousand cuts to Northallerton High Street. Whilst constantly declaring that they are wanting to support the traders in the town, at every turn they do what they can to undermine them. ....
I BRING you good news from Northallerton High Street. When the time comes, you will have two new restaurants to sample. Caio Bella Cucina opened back in October in The Fleece – Northallerton’s oldest pub. Before that it had been closed as a pub for many months, the previous tenant having ducked out earlier in this benighted year – or perhaps it was even before that. Like many of us I suspect, time is beginning to lose its usual reference points. Anyway it’s a restaurant offering within a pub – and that counts as a new restaurant to me. Then just before Christmas in what was Pizza Express – another casualty of the pandemic – Bianco Ristorante opened its doors. ....
Railway crossing TO all those people who think a bridge over the Low Gates level crossing in Northallerton is the answer to congestion when the gates are down, may I suggest that they take a Covid-compliant look at what is being built to take North Moor Road over the same railway line. If they do, they will realise that a bridge is a complete non-starter and that the answer can only be to move the line to the North of the town, as was suggested a few years ago in your newspaper. Given the increase in traffic that the new Northallerton estate is likely to generate and the potential increase in rail traffic when Teesside becomes a Freeport it really is time that that the various government agencies got together and came up with a coherent plan to resolve the chaos created by Low Gates crossing, a chaos that can only get worse. ....
TEJANOS, Northallerton’s Tex-Mex joint, had been on the list for a takeaway experience way back in the first lockdown. We’ve always liked it, not least because it has managed to survive arguably the most inhospitable environment for restaurants in North Yorkshire – namely the county town’s High Street. It has done so without the benefit of a High Street frontage. In normal times you really have to seek it out, via an entrance down an alleyway by the side and Lakeland Leather. Beyond the first-floor signage, the clues to its presence are not obvious. That speaks of above and beyond staying power and they have mostly traded through the last year either properly open or offering takeaways and delivery services. Trouble was during the first lockdown it was so popular we could never get through to place an order. ....
