The corpse of a lawyer, Mr Egbara Owan, has disappeared from a mortuary in Owakande 2 in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The programme for interment of the man had begun with a lying-in-state at the Obubra Magistrate Court but family members and sympathizers who gathered there had to disperse when the ambulance sent to the local mortuary to convey the corpse for the ceremony came back without the corpse.
An eyewitness who preferred anonymity said, “Apparently, someone had gone to the mortuary to remove the corpse and when the family went there, the body was nowhere to be found.’

THERE was confusion in Owakande 2 in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State following the disappearance of the body of a lawyer, Mr Egbara Owan which was scheduled for interment at the weekend.
The programme for internment of the man had begun with a lying-in-state at the Obubra Magistrate Court on Saturday but family members and sympathisers who gathered there had to disperse when ambulance sent to the local mortuary to take the corpse for the ceremony went back without the corpse.
“Apparently someone had gone to the mortuary to remove the corpse and when the family went there yesterday, Saturday, to remove the body it was nowhere to be found, a source from the area, James Okpa said.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has threatened to sue the Cross River government over the non-payment of magistrates for two years.
Newsmen had reported that one of the magistrates, Richard Bassey, on Tuesday, collapsed at the gate of the governor’s office in Calabar during a protest over unpaid 24 months’ salary.
In his statement on the development on Friday, the NBA President, Olumide Akpata, described the “excuses” offered by the Cross River State Government for not paying the magistrates as unfortunate.
Mr Akpata said he had been interfacing with the Attorney-General of the state before his emergence as the NBA President on how to resolve the problem to no avail.

Following the non-payment of Magistrates’ for two years, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has threatened to sue the Cross River government.
Reacting to the development in a statement on Friday, the NBA President, Olumide Akpata, described the excuses offered by the Cross River State Government for not paying the magistrates as unsatisfactory.
It would be recalled that the 30 affected magistrates had taken to the streets to protest the non-payment of their salaries.
The NBA chairman said he held a meeting with some of the 30 magistrates in January 2020, assuring them of his support towards the resolution of the matter.
