NAINITAL: Locals and environmentalists have intensified their protest against the proposed “redevelopment” of Sattal an interconnected group of seven lakes located a few kilometres from Nainital with many opposing “concretisation of an ecological paradise”. The Sattal redevelopment plan involves building a kid’s park, a view point, besides beautification and landscaping work. But locals say any construction in the fragile area would damage its rich biodiversity. Last week, as work on the project officially started, residents initiated Twitter storms with photos of an earthmover next to the pristine waters of the Sattal lake. An e-petition to declare Sattal a “conservation reserve” has also garnered 32,000 signs while a website has been set up to ‘Save Sattal’. The region is famous as a birdwatching spot and is one of the few breeding places for the endangered mahseer fish. It is also one of the last remaining oak forests in Uttarakhand.
