Following stiff opposition from farmers to carrying out works to renovate and modernise the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) main canal at ₹709.60 crore, the district administration has halted the commencement of works till May 5.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Coimbatore on February 25 laid the foundation stone for the extension, renovation and modernisation of LBP irrigation system at a total cost of ₹933.10 crore. While package I to IV covers LBP main canal, package V covers Kalingarayan Canal and package VI covers Thadappalli and Arakkankottai Canals.

Members of the Keel Bhavani Murai Neer Pasana Vivasaigal Sabai (Lower Bhavani Farmers Federation) have urged the district administration to expedite the project to renovate the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) main canal project and complete it on time.
In a petition to District Collector C. Kathiravan by its president P. Kasiyannan here on Monday, he said that the LBP main canal that runs for 201 km irrigates 2.07 lakh hectares in the districts of Erode, Tiruppur and Karur and the main canal also feeds Arakkankottai and Thadapalli canals and the Kalingarayan Canal. The petition said that the foundation was laid on February 24 for extension, renovation and modernisation of LBP system at a total cost of ₹ 933.10 crore. However, preliminary works have just begun. A slew of demands put forth by the farmers of Kangeyam Assembly constituency seem to remain unaddressed, following which they have now decided to file nominations to contest in the Assembly election.
In January, a group of farmers went on a five-day hunger strike demanding adequate release of water to the Vellakoil branch canal within the constituency under the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project (PAP). Members of the PAP-Vellakoil Branch Canal Water Protection Committee, which comprises farmers from Kangeyam and Vellakoil blocks, alleged that water was not being released for irrigating agricultural lands in accordance with the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project (Regulation of Water Supply) Act, 1993.

It has bagged another order from the Highways Department as part of the Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor Project which involves upgrading two stretches of the road at a total contract price of Rs 558.66 crore.
