Two months later, Waterloo Region identified its first case after two people had returned from Italy. What followed next would be nine months of illness and heartbreak, but also resilience and hope. KITCHENER The Ontario government announced on Friday morning that Grand River Hospital will be receiving its first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the next two weeks. According to a news release, Kitchener s hospital will be among 17 hospital sites that will receive the vaccine by the end of the year. The province is expected to receive as many as 90,000 doses before the year end. Those doses will help officials vaccinate health-care workers and essential caregivers working in hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes. During a media briefing on Friday morning, Dept. Chief Shirley Hilton, who is leading the region s task force, said that the region could see vaccines as early as Dec. 23. ....

Ontario reported 2,275 on December 15, bringing a cumulative total of 144,396 cases across the province. 123,373 cases have been resolved and there have been 3,992 deaths. Peel Region reported 586 new cases as of December 15 for a total of 32,228 cases since the start of the pandemic. 27,385 cases have been resolved, and 4,435 remain active with 408 deaths. Numbers continue to rise in the regions that remain in the Grey-Lockdown level including 711 new cases in Toronto, 185 in Windsor-Essex and 154 in York Region. ....

MONTREAL It was declared a historic day in Quebec as the first COVID-19 vaccines were given Monday to residents of two long-term care homes in the province. Gloria Lallouz, a resident of Montreal s Maimonides Geriatric Centre, said she felt fabulous after receiving the first Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination in the city. The stakes, the 78-year-old said, couldn t be higher. It’s my life, Lallouz told reporters outside the long-term care home, which received the first batches of the vaccine Monday morning. It gives me the opportunity to see my family, to see my friends. She added that she is eager for others to follow suit. ....
