Member of Parliament (MP) for Portland Eastern, the Jamaica Labour Party’s Ann-Marie Vaz, has slammed Opposition leader and President of the People’s National Party (PNP) Mark Golding after he reportedly accused her of remaining silent as murders are on the rise in the usually peaceful parish that she represents in the Parliament.
Eleven murders have been committed in the northeastern parish since the start of the year. This compares to four for the corresponding period in 2020.
“What I am hearing is the fear on the ground because of the rapid increase in murders in the parish,” said Golding as he addressed a PNP divisional conference in Port Antonio on Wednesday.

Member of Parliament for East Central St Andrew, the People’s National Party’s Dr Peter Phillips, has expressed sadness at the news of the passing of University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor Edwin Jones on Wednesday.
Jones, who had been ailing for some time, died in hospital. He was 80 years old.
“Professor Jones was an insightful scholar and public servant who made a major contribution to the development of public administration in modern Jamaica,” said Phillips.
The former Opposition leader described his long-time friend and colleague as an erstwhile (former) Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) and Professor of Public Administration at the UWI. Phillips also noted that Jones served on several public boards and as special adviser in the Office of the Prime Minister between 1993 and 2001.
