India, EU to join hands to build global infrastructure projects

India, EU to join hands to build global infrastructure projects
Connectivity partnership aims to counter China Belt Road Initiative
India and the European Union (EU) are looking to team up and build infrastructure projects globally that would counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The key focus for what has been described as a “connectivity” partnership would be on energy, digital and transportation projects in Europe, Asia and also Africa, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
Both sides were at pains to emphasise that the new partnership won’t attempt to “compete” with the BRI but the effort clearly is to block China from stitching together an “all roads lead to Beijing” zone in the three continents. ....

KUANTAN: From humble beginnings, Kuantan has come a long way to become a beacon of the east coast.
The former tiny hamlet will officially be proclaimed as a city today by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
Kuantan will thus be the first in Pahang and the 18th in the country to be accorded city status.
It is known as a major trade, commerce, tourism and transportation hub today and the greater region of the city centre can be traced back to settlements set up more than a century ago. ....

Singapore There was a time when the Singapore-Malaysia High-Speed Rail (HSR) link project was seen as an olive branch of sorts, an opportunity to bury the hatchet between the neighbouring countries, according to a report in scmp.com (South China Morning Post) on Sunday (Jan 10).
Unfortunately, the bilateral agreement for the HSR, signed on Dec 31, 2016, under Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, expired at midnight on Dec 31, 2020 after Singapore and Malaysia could not come to an agreement regarding the changes the latter country wanted. ....

For many observers, the 2016 bilateral agreement between Malaysia and Singapore to construct a high-speed rail (HSR) link was a seminal moment in the neighbours history.
The pact was a capstone of sorts to the energetic efforts of Singapore s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his then-counterpart, Najib Razak, to overcome an acrimonious past that included disputes over everything from water supply to outcrops in the sea, airspace, and land that belonged to Malaysia before Singapore split off to become an independent nation. ....
