Judge rejects request to withdraw plea by man convicted in crash that killed 3 Girl Scouts and mom

CHIRS VETTER Eau Claire Leader-Telegram CHIPPEWA FALLS — A Chippewa County judge rejected Colten R. Treu s request Wednesday to withdraw his pleas for causing a crash in November 2018 that killed three Girl Scouts and a mother. Judge James Isaacson sentenced Colten R. Treu in March 2020 to serve 54 years in prison, after Treu had pleaded no contest to four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and one count of hit and run, causing great bodily harm. Treu, 24, of Chippewa Falls filed a request in January to withdraw his pleas in the matter. Treu’s new attorney is Dennis Schertz of Hudson, who contends that Treu s original attorneys erroneously advised him that he could still appeal his denied request for a change of venue, even after entering a plea.

Chippewa County firefighter shot by gun triggered by heat of fire, authorities say

CHRIS VETTER Eau Claire Leader-Telegram CORNELL — Justin Fredrickson was extinguishing a house fire near Sheldon on Feb. 19 when he suddenly felt a pain in his stomach, according to Cornell Area Fire Chief Dennis Klass. “He was spraying water and he felt like he was hit in the stomach by a two-by-four,” Klass said Wednesday. Fredrickson, 35, was wearing full turnout gear. He started to remove the clothing, to discover he had been shot in his lower stomach. Because of the gear, there wasn’t much blood visible. Apparently, a loaded .38-caliber pistol within the house had fired, although no one was inside the structure. The gun had become so hot due to conditions from the blaze it began to fire rounds.

Tiny homes village being planned in the Chippewa Valley

CHRIS VETTER Eau Claire Leader-Telegram When Mike Cohoon began working on plans for tiny homes — portable homeless shelters — he envisioned a long-term plan of creating the “Hope Village,” bringing the tiny homes into one central location, which would also include a permanent building that features showers and bathrooms. That plan is moving closer to reality. Cohoon, a pastor at Landmark Christian Church in Lake Hallie, said his group is planning to purchase a former dental office at 1825 Kennedy Road on the East Hill of Chippewa Falls. The tiny homes would be placed behind the 2,000-square-foot building, with the dental offices gutted and renovated.
