April 15, 2021 By Jessica Mathews / news@whmi.com Howell High School’s Air Force JROTC CyberPatriot Team has claimed second place in a national competition. Cadets from Howell High School’s Air Force JROTC (AFJROTC) program recently concluded what was described as an exceptional season of CyberPatriot, the Air Force Association’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The competition challenges teams of students across the United States, Canada, and other schools abroad, to find and resolve cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated environments. The top teams from the preliminary online rounds earn a place at the Virtual National Finals Competition, where students compete for national recognition and scholarships.

January 27, 2021 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com Three local high school students are flying high after being selected to receive a prestigious scholarship and opportunity from the Air Force. Three Howell High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets have been selected to receive scholarships and an invitation to attend a private pilot license training program at an accredited aviation university this summer. Those cadets are Lillian Vincent, Clara Jackson, and Grace Fyke. Only 230 scholarships were awarded worldwide, with the Howell trio being selected from more than 1,300 cadets who applied. According to a release from Howell Public Schools, the scholarship each will receive is valued at over $22,000, and is from Headquarters Air Force Junior ROTC, Maxwell Air Force Base, in Montgomery, Alabama. It will cover transportation, room and board, academics, and flight hours required to potentially earn a private pilot license. The scholarship program is

Share Clare Elizabeth McKeagney SOUTH PORTLAND – Clare Elizabeth McKeagney died at home on Jan. 16, 2021, at 74, as a result of advancing cardio-vascular disease. She was granted her long-standing wish simply to “drop dead” rather than experiencing a long, debilitating struggle. Clare was born in Portland on April 24, 1946 to Virginia Williams of Cape Elizabeth. She was immediately adopted by her grandparents, Ivor and Mabel Williams, also of Cape Elizabeth. She grew up spending hours playing at the shoreline in Cape and at the family cottage on Long Island. She developed a deep and strongly held love of Casco Bay that left her with a lifetime need to hear pounding surf and to smell ocean water.
