The Mater Dei Centre for Catholic Education (MDCCE) warmly welcomes the appointment of Archbishop Dermot Farrell as the new Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland. We also offer our very best wishes to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who established the Centre in conjunction with DCU, on his retirement. Archbishop Farrell’s installation as leader of the Catholic Church in Dublin is planned for 2
nd February 2021.
Archbishop Farrell is from Castletown-Geoghegan in County Westmeath. He was ordained in 1980 as a priest for the Diocese of Meath. He took further studies in Theology in Rome and joined the staff at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1990, eventually becoming President there from 1996-2007. From September 2007 he served as Parish Priest of Dunboyne and Kilbride Parish in the Diocese of Meath until his appointment in 2018 as Bishop of Ossory.

A former Tullamore based priest has been appointed as the new Archbishop of Dublin.
Pope Francis, has appointed the Most Reverend Dr Dermot Farrell, until now Bishop of Ossory, as Archbishop of Dublin. A Westmeath native, he was appointed Curate in Tullamore Parish in the late 1980s after returning from studying in Rome.
Born in 1954, he began his studies for the priesthood at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth in 1972, obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1976, as part of his philosophical studies.
During his theological studies he was awarded a Bachelor in Divinity Degree in 1979 and a licence is Theology in 1981, both by the Pontifical University, Maynooth.

The Bishop of Ossory Dermot Farell has thanked people of parishes in Laois and other counties following his elevation as the new Archbishop of Dublin.
Archbishop-elect Farrell replaces the Most Reverend Archbishop Diarmuid Martin whose request for retirement was accepted by Pope Francis and becomes effective from today, the day of the appointment of his successor.
The date for taking over the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Dublin will be announced at a later time and, during the
interregnum until the installation of the new Archbishop, Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Martin by Decree as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Dublin with all the rights, faculties and duties of a diocesan bishop. Bishop Farrell becomes Archbishop-elect of Dublin and continues in the capacity of the Administrator of the Diocese of Ossory.

Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverend Dr Dermot Farrell, until now Bishop of Ossory, as Archbishop of Dublin.
The Archdiocese oversees large parts of Co Kildare and has 19 parishes in the Maynooth Deanery and 12 parishes in the Blessington Deanery.
Dr Farrell studied at St Patrick s College in Maynooth in the 1970s and two decades later became Vice-President and later President of the College, a position he held until 2007.
