There is a long road between now and Georgia’s November municipal elections; however, several cities in Hall County have begun the process of publishing qualifying details for candidates eyeing a seat on their local municipal boards.
Municipalities had until Feb. 1 to publish qualifying fees before candidates can begin filing for respective seats in August.

Georgia professors bristle at questions from GOP lawmaker

ATLANTA (AP) A Georgia lawmaker is trying to find out whether any of the state’s public universities are teaching about white privilege or oppression, part of a larger national debate over how colleges should teach about American history and race relations.
University System of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley asked the system’s 26 colleges and universities on Jan. 21 to research the information after state Rep. Emory Dunahoo, a Gillsville Republican, submitted questions on the topic to Wrigley following budget hearings.
Some faculty members are bristling at the questions, saying they intrude into a professor’s academic freedom and are part of an effort by Republicans to impose their vision of history and social relations. Conservatives, though, say they’re fighting left-wing indoctrination by professors.

The Georgia State Patrol says a Gillsville man was distracted when the tanker truck he was driving went out of control and overturned on Ga. 15/U.S. 441 near Homer just before 8:30 p.m. on Christmas, spilling 4,000 gallons of gasoline.
The driver of a gasoline tanker that crashed on U.S. 441/Ga. 15 in Banks County on Christmas was distracted at the time, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Walter Catledge, 55, of Gillsville was driving a 2019 Kenworth semi truck northbound on Ga. 15/U.S. 441 when the driver failed to maintain his lane and traveled off the roadway, said Cpl. B.D. Taylor of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville. “The vehicle overturned, losing its cargo. The report does advise that the driver was distracted at the time of the crash.”
