Magellan was not the first to travel the world—it was a Filipino

Published March 3, 2021, 11:30 PM Salcedo Auctions holds first major Important Philippine Art & Furniture sale for 2021 to commemorate 500 years of cross-cultural encounters LARGER THAN LIFE This untitled work in oil on canvas, the largest of Elmer Borlongan’s works ever to go on auction, is the jewel of the collection to go under the hammer at Salcedo Auctions’ March 13 sale Was Ferdinand Magellan the first to circumnavigate the world? No, but we’ll get to that later. Was Magellan even Spanish? No, he was Portuguese. His name wasn’t even Magellan, it was Fernão de Magalhães. He was a page to queen consort Eleanor and Manuel I of Portugal, who later denied his campaign to sail west, instead of east, in search of a new spice route on suspicions that he was into illegal trading. So he went to King Charles I of Spain, with which Portugal at that time was engaged in intense conflict. In Spain, he was lavished with every opportunity to succeed, so he did. His was “the grea

Why Isabel Yap keeps coming back to fan fiction

Why Isabel Yap keeps coming back to fan fiction Written by Oliver Emocling enablePagination: false endIndex: In her debut story collection “Never Have I Ever,” Isabel Yap borrows from mythology and fan fiction conventions to craft narratives that remind readers of their humanity. Portrait by MEG WHITTENBERGER In my conversation with the U.S.-based Filipino writer Isabel Yap, I found myself confessing to not pursuing personal writing projects. That all I could do after a long day of work is watch an episode of the volleyball anime “Haikyuu.” “I love Haikyuu!” she says. Yap, who is currently juggling writing (both fiction and her occasional Substack posts on her practice) and product management at a start-up in California, started watching “Haikyuu” during the second year of her MBA program at Harvard Business School a period where she had to grapple for time to write.

Read Local! A brief guide to reading more Philippine Literature

This 2021, you can expand your reading list and consider these Filipino writers and publishers. With the country’s notoriously fickle internet connectivity and the continuing danger of physical contact, I find books a safe remedy to the growing loneliness of lockdown. Many local cultural workers and institutions, despite the punishing circumstances of this current crisis, are putting out work, which deserve a much larger audience. This 2021, you can expand your reading list and consider these Filipino writers and publishers. National Publishers The country’s biggest publishers often still have books worth checking out. Anvil Publishing has repackaged several Filipino classics for a contemporary audience, including Manuel Arguilla, Lope K. Santos, and the always fabulous Nick Joaquin. Books from the dearly departed Visprint Inc Bob Ong’s bestsellers, Agay Llanera’s heartfelt “Choco Chip Hips,” “Kikomachine,” and “Trese” comics have found a second life in A
