The McKinney City Council on Monday appointed Angela Richardson-Woods to fill the District 1 seat left vacant after November’s recall of La’Shadion Shemwell.
Richardson-Woods is the first Black woman to serve on the McKinney City Council and will hold the position until elections in May.
A board member of the McKinney Community Development Corp., according to a biography on the city’s website, she has more than 25 years of experience in rural community development working as a community program specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The McKinney City Council has appointed Angela Richardson-Woods to fill the District 1 seat left vacant following the recall vote of La Shadion Shemwell in November.
She is the first Black woman to sit on the McKinney City Council and will hold the position until the elections in May 2021.
Richardson-Woods is a current board member of the McKinney Community Development Corporation, and she has more than 25 years of experience in rural community development as a Community Program Specialist with the USDA Rural Development Agency where she administers the Water and Environmental and Community Facilities Programs in North Texas, the City of McKinney said.
McKinney city council to pick new temporary member after Thornton found to be ineligible
Chris Thornton, who was temporarily appointed to fill La’Shadion Shemwell’s seat on Dec. 1, does not live within District 1, a requirement for the interim position.

Chris Thornton missed out on serving as the city of McKinney’s temporary District 1 city councilman by 10 feet and 10 inches.
That’s how far Thornton lives outside the district. It disqualifies him from temporarily filling the seat, vacated by former city council member La’Shadion Shemwell who was ousted by city voters in November. Thornton would have served in the role until a May special election.
