Dene national chief says N W T should create own school curriculum

Posted: Apr 06, 2021 5:00 AM CT | Last Updated: April 6 Alberta s proposed changes to its curriculum is spurring a conversation about how the N.W.T. should move forward.(CBC) Alberta s decision to renew its education system could lead to a change in the course of learning in the Northwest Territories. The province is coming under fire for proposed changes to its K-6 curriculum that critics are calling Eurocentric, dismissive of Indigenous perspectives, and not based on research about how to teach young children.  The N.W.T. has used portions of Alberta s K-12 curriculum and provincial exams since the 1970s. Dene National Chief Norman Yakeleya said it s time for the territory to create its own school curriculum, independent from other jurisdictions.

The NWT currently uses a mix of locally created curriculum and curriculum from other jurisdictions in western Canada, though much is from Alberta, particularly when it comes to high school.
