South Island greyhound races scheduled for this week have been cancelled following an outbreak of canine coronavirus cases in Canterbury.
In an advisory on its website, Greyhound Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) said all South Island races have been ceased until next Monday. Canine enteric coronavirus was first suspected in greyhounds in the adoption program in June and was confirmed on 25th in two kennels in Christchurch that had GAP (greyhounds as pets) dogs as well as racing dogs. © Video - Newshub; Image - Getty Images

Angela Turnwald, the greyhound racing trainer who was fined and disqualified for four months earlier this year following a doping scandal, has now had that disqualification extended to 18 months.
Turnwaldâs dog Zipping Sarah tested positive for methamphetamine at a race in November last year in Christchurch. After the initial sentencing in April, the Racing Integrity Unit appealed the sentence seeking a greater punishment.
SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe said itâs a bittersweet result.
âThe greyhound racing industry only drug tests 7% of the dogs that are raced, so this could just be the tip of the iceberg,â said Appelbe.
