B.C. first responders, frontline workers call for vaccine prioritization

VICTORIA Many frontline workers in B.C. are still waiting for their turn to be vaccinated, and that includes first responders. Our members are a little frustrated with not being vaccinated at this point, said Matt Waterman with the Victoria City Police Union. The province originally targeted first responders with the AstraZeneca vaccine, but then widespread rollout of that vaccine was put on hold due to fears of blood clots. Once Health Canada decided it was OK to administer the brand again, British Columbia opened up that vaccine for people aged 55 and older. The vaccine rollout then expanded to people aged 40 older, bypassing first responders.

COVID-19: British Columbians banned from travelling outside their health regions

Article content British Columbians who travel between health authorities for non-essential reasons could face a $575 fine under a new order now in effect until after the May long weekend, the government announced Friday in a bid limit the spread of COVID-19. The new order will divide the province into three regional zones, including the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, and the Northern/Interior regions, said Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth. Police officers will establish checkpoints, similar to the roadblocks set up to catch impaired drivers, on major travel routes such as ferry terminals, Highway 1 into B.C.’s Interior and the Coquihalla Highway.
