Cleveland Police in the north east recorded 113.4 crimes per 1,000 people according to the latest ONS figures (year ending December 2020). Eight out of the ten forces with the highest levels are in the north of England, with Kent and the West Midlands being the exceptions.

Two career criminals who murdered a 61-year-old man by torturing him to death are jailed for life

Two career criminals who murdered a 61-year-old man in his own home after tying him up and torturing him in an ordeal lasting up to an hour have been jailed for life. Craig Stanton, 43, and Alexander Mackay, 47, broke into Saleem Butt s house in Batley, West Yorkshire, through an open window on April 24 looking for cash and drugs.  The pair then tortured the lonely and isolated man to death using a knife and screwdriver, Judge Rodney Jameson QC told Leeds Crown Court.    The judge said Mr Butt was gagged and tied up in such a way that, if he struggled, a rope would tighten round his neck.
