I’d like to encourage everyone who reads this to please look up on Google or YouTube the 1838 Lyceum Address by Abraham Lincoln. It was written 23 years before the Civil War. Similar to today, tensions were high, and there was much unease.
Lincoln warned the nation of immense harm that would prevail if we “the people” permit it. Very similar to today, mobs were what some thought was an adequate way of change.

Pennsylvanians use almost 4.6 billion plastic bags every year, and each bag typically only has a lifespan of 20 to 30 minutes, or the time it takes to drive home from the store. It is high time for Pittsburgh to ban the use of single-use plastic bags or, at the minimum, implement strategies to discourage their use.
Plastic bags are not easily recycled and are a common source of pollution. Plastic is produced from crude oil, so the continued use of plastics can contribute to the global release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

We are finally moving toward keeping first responders and construction
workers safe with the new “Move Over” law (”Pennsylvania’s ‘Move Over’ law now in effect for motorists,” April 27, TribLIVE).
Many first responders and construction workers have been killed or injured by vehicles driving too close to where they are working or drivers not following the speed limit in designated zones. This law will give them a safety buffer with some extra room.
The law also will provide a hefty fine to violators. I think it is about time that fines are increased and action is taken to keep first responders and construction workers safe.
