Maryland Optimistic for Improved Rural Broadband

That’s the consensus of several speakers on a LEAD Maryland Alumni workshop webinar held May 12. Dependable and fast broadband — that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg — is a consistent concern of many in rural communities. It’s needed for getting the most out of precision ag equipment, and for work and school at home. “We’re really hopeful we can make a real dent in rural broadband access in the next couple of years,” said Charlotte Davis of the Rural Maryland Council. She described Maryland’s broadband as “Swiss cheese,” with high connection in urban areas and spotty service in rural areas.

AgriCulture: Farm Museum sneak peek, free fishing dates announced

Cecil County Farm Museum and Regional Agricultural Center is poised to open its doors to the public next month. There was a sneak preview Wednesday for officials of Cecil County and Maryland as well as Cecil County Public Schools. The center is located on Appleton Road in Elk Mills and shares the campus of the Cecil County School of Technology. Jeffrey Lawson, superintendent of the schools, said he sees the center becoming part of the curriculum. “I think it’s a great idea to bring some of our students through in a field trip setting,” Lawson said after touring the buildings, which include living displays, vintage and antique farm technology and a classroom. “Here they can experience and learn more about the local community.”

Hershey receives Rural Champion Award

ANNAPOLIS — State Sen. Stephen S. Hershey Jr. has been named a “rural champion” by the Rural Maryland Council. According to a news release, the RMC and its membership convened by teleconference on Dec. 2 for its executive board meeting and Rural Impacts Award ceremony. This annual event provides an overview of upcoming events and activities for 2021 and honors advocates for rural Maryland communities, the release states. “After one year as Chair of the RMC, I have met so many more people that support the mission of the Rural Maryland Council. I was humbled to present these awards to some of our most caring citizens,” said John Hartline.
