COVID-19 takes another Graham County resident

A senior citizen from Thatcher has become the 51st Graham County resident to die while battling COVID-19. The Graham County Health Department announced the death Thursday along with 48 new cases of the virus. Thirty-two of the new patients live in Safford, nine in Thatcher and five are members of the San Carlos Apache tribe. Two live in Pima. Since the start of the pandemic, 3,228 Graham County residents have contracted the virus, 1,437 of them 20-44 years of age. The next biggest group is children (582). More than 1,000 Graham County residents are battling COVID-19 as of Thursday. There are also 135 Greenlee County residents sick as of Thursday morning, eight of them were diagnosed Wednesday.

Nearly 300 have received vaccines so far in Graham County; mask mandate could get extended

The Graham County Health Department has distributed roughly half of its initial batch of 600 COVID-19 vaccines. Graham County Health Department Director Brian Douglas said some of the doses were given to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center for dissemination amongst its staff, but the health department has been administering doses to other health care and long-term care workers personally. Long-term care residents have also been getting the vaccine. “We’ll be ordering our second shipment in the next couple of weeks and it will only take a couple of days to arrive,” Douglas said. By that time, Douglas said he suspects the health department will be ready to start vaccinating the next in line for the shot under U.S. Centers for Disease Control guidelines — law enforcement officers, teachers and school staff members and “essential” workers like those who work for oil, gas, electric and water utility companies.
