From the ages of 16 to 32 he played for the Tokanui senior rugby team and in the past decade he coached rugby at Southland Boys’ High School in Invercargill and at Menzies College. Rugby Southland general manager Steve Mitchell said Hapuku was hugely respected in southern rugby circles. “He did a lot for rugby, particularly in the schools.” There was a massive crowd at Hapuku’s funeral at Curio Bay on Monday, Mitchell said. “He held huge mana out there . that was obvious at the funeral.”
