Nakasendo Way, Japan
Now known as the Nakasendo Way, during the Edo Period (1603 to 1868), the Nakasendo Trail connected Kyoto to Tokyo. The name Nakasendo Trail, literally translates to “middle mountain way” or “path through the mountains.” The best-preserved portion of the Nakasendo Way is a picturesque trail through the mountains that runs through the Kiso Valley in southwestern Nagano Prefecture.

I watch the steady flow of emerald water – rugged monochrome boulders lining the far riverside, a serene bamboo forest just behind me – and battle a moment of doubt. When I stop and listen (no mean feat with my daughters, aged six and eight, racing around in wetsuits and helmets) I hear a low-key rumble: the sound of distant rapids.
As if reading my mind – and before I mention that my youngest is perhaps not the strongest swimmer – Taro Ando gives me a champion smile, dazzling and reassuring: “The girls are with me. They will be safe! Let’s go!”

Nagiso, Nagano Pref. – On the one hand: an ancient Japanese lacquerware technique dating back to the Heian Period (794-1185), famed for its delicate beauty, seasonal motifs and rich heritage. On the other: a 6-year-old girl who finds it hard to sit still and would rather be making “machines” out of twigs, stones and sticky tape.
I admit, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when my youngest daughter came face-to-face with the very refined world of
maki-e during a children’s workshop in a century-old atelier in Nagano Prefecture.
The art of maki-e has long been treasured in Japan. A clue into the craftsmanship that lies behind the lacquerware decoration technique is found in its name which translates as “sprinkled picture.”
