Plentiful opportunities to get your COIVD-19 shot

There will be more free COVID-19 vaccination events over the next few days in St. Clair County. Vaccines will be available on a walk in basis Thursday between 9am and 7pm at the Knight Club in Marysville. There will also be an event specifically for teens at Port Huron Northern today from 2:30 to 6:30pm with preregistration required. Friday sees another walk in clinic at the Harvey Reinvestment Center on 24th Street in Port Huron from noon to 6pm. On Saturday you can get the shot at a drive through event at the Tri-Hospital EMS building on Horseshoe drive in Kimball Township from 10am to 2pm. Local businesses to receive $320K for electric vehicle charging stations

Two businesses in St. Clair County and one business in Sanilac County will receive a total of $320,000 to install fast charging stations for private and commercial electric vehicles.
Local Sunrise Stores LLC, TNT Equipment and SpeedyQ Market locations are among 32 across Michigan approved for Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Charge Up Michigan program grants, which totals over $1.8 million, according to a press release from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office.
“Michigan put the world on wheels and will continue driving the world forward by leading on mobility and electrification,” Whitmer said. “These grants demonstrate our commitment to expanding EV infrastructure across Michigan and build on the extraordinary work and investments of our innovative industry partners and EGLE to help support drivers who make the transition to electric vehicles.” ....

Local road, bridge projects get underway

Repairs to the Masters Road Bridge over the Belle River in St. Clair County’s Riley Township will begin today. The St. Clair County Road Commission will be cleaning and re-coating the bridge’s steel beams for approximately the next month. Masters Road between Riley Center and Eagling Roads will be closed to through traffic during the duration of the project.
Work has also begun on a repaving portion of M-46 in Sanilac County. The Michigan Department of Transportation will resurface 1.6 miles of M-46 between Townline Roads and Maple Valley Streets in the City of Sandusky. Expect temporary lane closures and traffic pattern changes through the end of May. ....

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy today announced the funding of more than $4.7 million in grants to develop new uses for used vehicle tires.
When illegal dumping in the environment occurs, scrap tires pose both a fire hazard and a human health risk as a mosquito breeding ground. These grants help reduce or eliminate instances of illegal dumping, support proper collection and handling, and begin to define scrap tires as a commodity, rather than a waste material.
These scrap tire grants support building sustainable markets for recycled tire materials in Michigan. Grants have traditionally included support for essential equipment and materials that aid in the establishment of new markets, including various manufacturing processes, implementation and testing of paving materials, energy generation, and other innovative approaches. ....
