NEWLAND â The Avery County School System is going all in to protect students who ride the bus through an innovative safety system, which is the first of its kind in the state.
The system uses a technology referred to as Predictive Stop Arms that utilizes radar and a loud external speaker to warn students of oncoming vehicles both in the rear and front of the bus if a vehicle is anticipated to speed by a stopped school bus. Initially announced by the school system in January, the new technology is currently being used on two buses on routes in which vehicles have run by a stopped bus, specifically on the four-lane in Newland between the traffic light and the WECR radio station, which is where 80 percent of the violations occur.
Billie Everhart Garrett passed at her home on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 after recently being hospitalized for an extended period of time.
She is survived by her husband Rick; their son, Zach (Hannah); a precious granddaughter, Elana; an adoptive granddaughter, Emmilyse Hoilman; sisters, Jill Leonard (Andy), Tammy Yarborough, and Mary Spake (Carl); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her cat, Muffin. Billie valued greatly her family, friends, and pets.
She was originally from Lexington, North Carolina and the daughter of the late Hazel Myers Everhart and Sam Eugene Everhart, Jr. She graduated from Lexington Senior High School and attended Davidson County Community College. She served in Raleigh as a Teacherâs Assistant with the Wake County School System after leaving Davidson County.

BANNER ELK â The time has come once again for people across the county to answer the call to lead, and there is no better opportunity to do so than by participating in the Avery County Chamber of Commerceâs Leadership Avery program.
Since 2016, the Chamber has welcomed the countyâs burgeoning leaders to connect with and learn from the local businesses and organizations that are integral to the fabric of everyday life within Avery County. Participants embark on an eight-month journey meant to enlighten them on how the various organizations and institutions throughout the county operate, both individually and together.
